Letting go – It’s my life, isn’t it?

One of the hardest things for us to understand when we think about our vocation is how God’s will and the desires of our heart can go together.  “If God was really calling me to that, wouldn’t I be drawn to that vocation?”  “I’ve always imagined myself getting married and having a family…therefore, that must be what God’s calling me to.”

But our God is a God full of surprises and sometimes His plan for you is very different from what you would have expected.  He won’t go against your desires, but perhaps He’ll reveal to you desires deeper and greater than you could have imagined.  There is a part of your heart that only God knows how to fill.  His plan includes your desires, but is not limited by them.  You have your will, your desires, and your plans but the most important thing to discover is how your will, your desires, and your plans can unite to God’s holy will for you.

The more you insist on your ideas, regardless of what God may be asking of you, the more restless you will become.  There are countless people that could attest to this very fact.  Happiness has never been found in seeking self.   “For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mk 8:35).  Happiness is found in the gift of self.  God is God and He can call whoever He wants, whenever He wants, and however He wants – but He also doesn’t intrude.  He waits for your response.
