Spiritual Reading: The Importance of a Good Book

Spiritual reading has always been an important aspect in the spiritual life. And although that is true, it seems that in the business of our days, it can be one of the first things that we drop on our schedule if we don’t have time. But it is necessary for the soul.

A believer, if they really want to be a true believer, needs to nourish their faith with the Word of God in Sacred Scripture, Church documents, and the lives of the Saints. When we strengthen our souls in this way, we grow closer to Christ. We can also gain a deeper understanding of our faith in order to defend ourselves from the false doctrines that continually emerge. St. Peter wrote to tell us:

There were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.” (1 Peter 2:11)

The faithful need to form their minds and stimulate their hearts by reading and listening to the words and thoughts taught by Christ. This does not mean that Sacred Scripture is the only thing considered spiritual reading because it is the Word of God.

In a broader sense, spiritual reading includes all good Christian books. We acknowledge that it is God who has been at the center of the lives of the Saints, their writings, the documents of the Catholic Church, and all other sound doctrine so that all these writings can be included in spiritual reading.

Maybe we should go even as far to say that it should be done without a mobile device or some other technological breakthrough. Although you can read books on different devices, it is worth “disconnecting” and picking up a real book, with pages, ink, and print for at least 15-30 minutes a day. Let God nourish your soul, inspire and stir great desires in your heart, without competing with anything else.
