Mary, Our Mother

Mary, Our Mother

If you want  to be holy and get to heaven, there is a shortcut: a refuge where we can gain strength, help when we’re tired, consolation when we’re beaten up, health for our sick souls. As St. Louis de Monfort wrote: "she is the safest, easiest, shortest and most perfect way of approaching Jesus."

If you look at the lives of the saints they all lived at different times and had very different lives. They all have two things in common: a great love for Our Blessed Mother and love for the Holy Eucharist. There is no shorter way to get to heaven then by giving yourself to Mary.

From the beginning of the Church, ever since the time of the Apostles, the Christians have found their strength in Mary, the Mother of God. She is the first disciple of Jesus and the one human person (who not being God at the same time) has been completely faithful to the Lord, the saint par excellence. Who else could teach us to love Jesus better? She also is close to God, she is His Mother after all…and she intercedes for us before God that we may one day be with them forever in Heaven. And to top it all off, Jesus gave us to her and her to us on the Cross. She is not just the Mother of God but of All Humankind, and of each individual.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Here are a few ways to get to know her:

  • Pray the Rosary
  • Talk to her when you pray, ask her to help you learn about Jesus and how to follow Him
  • Talk to her throughout the day asking her how she washed dishes for Jesus, how she prayed, how she cooked, how she would have studied if she'd ever gone to college…etc.

From the Saints

All saints are imitators of Mary. She is the most beautiful and most pure of all the members of Christ’s Body--and so without fail the saints work to become more like Her and Her Son.

The things that the saints say about Mary can help remind us about our Heavenly Mother and, most importantly, help us to love Her more and more.

St. John Paul II

"'The victory, if it comes, will come through Mary.' As I became more involved in the problems of the universal Church, I came to have a similar conviction: On this universal level, if victory comes it will be brought by Mary. Christ will conquer through her, because He wants the Church's victories now and in the future to be linked to her."
Crossing the Threshold of Hope

"Women, by looking to Mary, find in her the secret of living their femininity with dignity and of achieving their own true advancement. In the light of Mary, the Church sees in the face of women the reflection of a beauty which mirrors the loftiest sentiments of which the human heart is capable: the self-offering totality of love; the strength that is capable of bearing the greatest sorrows; limitless fidelity and tireless devotion to work; the ability to combine penetrating intuition with words of support and encouragement."
Redemptoris Mater

St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort

"Any good our soul could produce is of less value to God our Father, in winning his friendship and favor, than a worm-eaten apple would be in the sight of a king, when presented by a poor peasant to his royal master as payment for the rent of his farm. But what would the peasant do if he were wise and if he enjoyed the esteem of the queen? Would he not present his apple first to her, and would she not, out of kindness to the poor man and out of respect for the king, remove from the apple all that was maggoty and spoilt, place it on a golden dish, and surround it with flowers? Could the king then refuse the apple? Would he not accept it most willingly from the hands of his queen who showed such loving concern for that poor man?"

"The most holy Virgin…who never lets herself be outdone in love and liberality, seeing that we give ourselves entirely to her…meets us in the same spirit. She also gives her whole self, and gives it in an unspeakable manner. To him who gives all to her. She causes him to be engulfed in the abyss of her graces. She adorns him with her merits; she supports him with her power; she illuminates him with her light; she inflames him with her love; she communicates to him her virtues: her humility, her faith, her purity and the rest…In a word, as that consecrated person all Mary’s, so Mary is all his."

St. Bernard of Clairvaux

"If you wish to present something to God, no matter how small it may be place it in the hands of Mary to ensure its certain acceptance."

“O whoever you are, since you see that you are drifting along the stream of time amidst storms and tempests rather than walking upon solid ground do not turn your glance from this shining star, if you do not want to perish in the storms. When the storm winds of temptations arise, when you are heading for the cliffs of anxieties, look up to the star and call on Mary. When you are being swept along by the waves of arrogance or ambition, or of slander or jealousy, look up to the star and call on Mary. When anger, greed or the pleasures of the flesh threaten to capsize the little ship of your soul, look up to Mary. When you are confused by the terrible extent of your guilt, ashamed of the stains on your conscience, horrified by the fear of judgment and are in danger of sinking into the pit of sadness, into the abyss of despair, then think of Mary.

In dangers and anxieties, in doubt and need, think of Mary, call on Mary. Let her never leave your lips, let her never depart from your heart. And in order to obtain an answer to your prayers, do not cease to imitate her life. Following her, you shall not stray; invoking her, you shall not despair; thinking of her, you shall not wander. Upheld by her, you shall not fall; shielded by her, you have nothing more to fear; guided by her, you grow not weary; favored by her, you reach the goal.”

St. Maximilian Kolbe

"Dearest children, I desire very much to tell you, to repeat to you, how good the Immaculata is. That way I could remove forever from your little hearts all sadness, despondency and discouragement. The word 'Maria' spoken by souls steeped in doubt and aridity or even misfortune due to sin, re-echoes in a heart that loves us very much. And the greater the unhappiness of the soul sunken low, the more solicitous is Her refuge of us poor sinners. Never worry that you cannot feel this love. If you have the will to love, you already give proof that you love. What counts is the will to love. Sometimes, my dear ones, the thought or sad longing - as if a plea or complaint, may occur to you - "Does the Immaculata still love me? Most beloved children, I tell you all and each one individually, in Her name, mark that - in Her name - She loves every one of you. She loves you very much and at every moment, without exception. Love the Immaculata, love the Immaculata. She will make you happy. Give Her your confidence without limit."

Prayers

Many saints, blesseds, venerables and other people in the Church have composed prayers to honor Mary. The prayers have been passed on to us so we can pray, grow close to her, and ask her for help in our daily lives.

Prayers

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Most Holy Mother : We consecrate ourselves to your Immaculate Heart with all our body and our soul. We wish to be only, always, and all yours. Like children we wish to remain in your heart, making it our home. Protect us always. We know that you never abandon those who turn to you with trust and consecrate their lives to You. We pray to you to have pity on the Home which you yourself have chosen as a gift and protect especially your Servant Brothers, Priests and Sisters who have surrendered their lives to you. Bless us, sustain us, and free us from the temptations of the Evil One. Immaculate Heart of Mary: Be our salvation! AMEN.

Morning Consecration to Mary

My Queen, My Mother, I offer myself entirely to thee. And to show my devotion to thee, I offer thee this day, my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as thy property and possession. Amen.

Totally Yours
Prayer composed by St. Maximilian Kolbe and recited by H.H. John Paul II

Immaculate Conception, Mary, my Mother. Live in me. Act in me. Speak in and through me. Think your thoughts in my mind. Love, through my heart. Give me your dispositions and feelings. Teach, lead and guide me to Jesus. Correct, enlighten and expand my thoughts and behavior. Possess my soul. Take over my entire personality and life. Replace it with yourself. Incline me to constant adoration and thanksgiving. Pray in me and through me. Let me live in you and keep me in this union always.

Deus Caritas Est
Benedict XVI

Holy Mary, Mother of God, you have given the world its true light, Jesus your Son—the Son of God. You abandoned yourself completely to God’s call and thus became a wellspring of the goodness which flows forth from him. Show us Jesus. Lead us to Him. Teach us to know and love Him, so that we too can become capable of true love and be fountains of living water in the midst of a thirsting world.

St. Maximilian Kolbe

O Inmaculata, Queen of heaven and earth, refuge of sinners and our most loving Mother, God has willed to entrust the entire order of mercy to you. I, ______, a repentant sinner, cast myself at your feet humbly imploring you to take me with all that I am and have, wholly to yourself as your possession and property. Please make of me, of all my powers of soul and body, of my whole life, death and eternity, whatever most pleases you. If it pleases you, use all that I am and have without reserve, wholly to accomplish what was said of you: “She will crush your head,” and, “You alone have destroyed all heresies in the whole world.” Let me be a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands for introducing and increasing your glory to the maximum in all the many strayed and indifferent souls, and thus help extend as far as possible the blessed kingdom of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For wherever you enter you obtain the grace of conversion and growth in holiness since it is through your hands that all graces come to us from the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Blessed Mother Teresa

Mary, lend me your heart.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, keep me in your most pure heart, so that I may please Jesus through you, in you, and with you.

Venerable María Teresa Gonzalez-Quevedo

Mother, let all who look at me see You in me

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The 10 virtues of the Blessed Mother are well known, and we should strive to imitate her. Here is a list. Pick one virtue a day or one a week and ask Our Lady in the morning to help you imitate her in that virtue.

Month of Mary

May is the month of Mary, the Mother of God and our Mother.

Although we should always honor Mary, the Church sets aside this month especially for her. The whole month we should be honoring her whether it be with prayers, the Rosary, sacrifices, imitating her and her virtues, and/or consoling her heart that receives so many offenses.

This month, get closer to Mary. Remember that getting closer to her means getting closer to Jesus. Her desire is that we love her Son more, and she will always lead us to Him.

Prayers

In Fatima, Portugal, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children and told them "Say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and the end of the war." and "When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: 'O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.' "

These are the 15 promises of Mary for those who pray the rosary:

  1. To all those who shall recite my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and very great graces.
  2. Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some
    signal grace.
  3. The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against Hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin, and dispel heresy.
  4. The Rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies; it will substitute in hearts love of God for love of the world, and elevate them to desire heavenly and eternal good. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means!
  5. Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.
  6. Those who shall recite my Rosary piously, considering its mysteries, will not be
overwhelmed by misfortune, nor die a bad death. The sinner will be converted; the just will grow in grace and become worthy of eternal life.
  7. Those truly devoted to my Rosary will not die without the consolations of the Church, or without grace.
  8. Those who shall recite my Rosary will find during their life and at their death the light of God, the fullness of His grace, and will share in the merits of the blessed.
  9. I will deliver very promptly from Purgatory the souls devoted to my Rosary.
  10. The true children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in Heaven.
  11. What you shall ask through my Rosary you shall obtain.
  12. Those who propagate my Rosary will obtain through me aid in all their necessities.
  13. I have obtained from my Son that all confreres of the Rosary shall have for their
brethren in life and death the saints of Heaven.
  14. Those who recite my Rosary faithfully are all my beloved children, the brothers
    and sisters of Jesus Christ.
  15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

Sacrifices

Our Lady has appeared many times to ask us to sacrifice for sinners, so that souls will convert and be saved from hell.

Think of some kind of sacrifice you can do to offer up for the salvation of sinners.

In Fatima, Mary said "Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially when you make some sacrifice: O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

Consoling her heart: 1st Saturday

The Immaculate Heart of Mary receives so many offenses with our sins. She asked us to make reparation, and she has told us how.

"look at My Heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me, and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months go to confession and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me."
