Up until this point you might not have seen the Spiritual Life as a battle, but sooner or later you will understand that it is certainly the most important battle you will ever fight! You are fighting for Eternal Life!
In the Spiritual Life, we are faced daily with countless temptations, it is necessary that we learn the way that we are to counter these temptations. You must remember that temptations will never cease, for this very reason you must be trained to resist and conquer the temptations that seek to destroy your peace and pull you away from God.
In order to join in the battle, one must first take up the fight in prayer. "The ‘spiritual battle’ of the Christian's new life is inseparable from the battle of prayer." (CCC# 2725) It is also very important to know that prayer is a battle and that often times when we pray we encounter numerous difficulties!
Sometimes one of the biggest battles is fought just to begin prayer, but the fight does not end there. Even after beginning prayer, the devil seeks to bring us to be lazy and many times puts distractions in the way. Though our bodies may be physically in Adoration the devil tries to distract us, suggesting thoughts about everything we must do that day, how tired we are, or how delicious a piece of cake would be. These are pretty obvious distractions, but not all of the distractions are this obvious! Sometimes we get distracted by wishing we were able to pray like that person in front of us or get caught up in thinking about ourselves, “How am I going to fix this problem?” and forget that we must rely totally on God!
"Prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part. It always presupposes effort." (CCC# 2725) Many people are given the idea that prayer is something man does on his own, they forget that they are given the grace by God to pray. Man, however, must respond to this grace and decide to use this grace he has been given. Have you received a gift from someone before and have not actually used it? In order for the gift to be of any use, one must decide to open it and use it, this requires effort on our part!
It is important to look at our life at this moment and see if there are things that we have done to separate us from God. What do we use our time for? What do we talk about? What do we look at? Examine your life and realize that we are all sinners in need of forgiveness! Why wait to be forgiven? Go to confession and tell God everything you do that is not pleasing to Him. How often we take for granted that we can go to confession and be forgiven!
There is a quote from St. John Bosco that helps us to understand a very powerful weapon to overcome the attacks of the devil. "Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and indispensable means of overcoming the attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you." Sometimes we might not be able to stay long in the Chapel, but it is still important that we take the time we can to visit Him.
Are you ready to be trained in the Spiritual Combat? Prepare for the battle by going to confession and then as frequently as possible go to Adoration for it is from prayer that God will build up your strength to resist and conquer the devil’s temptations.
