Pier was born on April 6th, 1901 into a wealthy and politically influential family in Turin, Italy. His parents were not very religious, in fact his father was agnostic. His parents had serious problems in their marriage—had they lived now maybe they would have divorced. So money, politics, and family problems….does that sound like a recipe for a saint?
It was the center of his life! Where else could he get the strength to live such intense faith and joy in a family that was "cold" towards spiritual things? His heroic virtues, the way he lived out the beatitudes, his life spent for the poor, were not just characteristics of a great guy, they were a result of His love and reception of the Holy Eucharist.
Pier Giorgio was madly in love with Mary, Mother of God and our Mother! To pray the rosary was, to quote his sister and best friend, “his consolation and his weapon.” It isn’t easy to be a Christian, especially in this world. But Pier Giorgio also had it hard. Because of this, he constantly turned to his Heavenly Mother for consolation and strength in his many daily battles.
The litanies of Blessed Pier Giorgio are a perfect summary of the saintly and profoundly human qualities that can be found in his life.
Have you ever met anyone who is the life of the party, who has a kind word for all, who is everyone’s best friend? If you have, then you know that these people can get whole crowds to go along with them.
